The church of Christ was established on the day of Pentecost, as is written in Acts 2. This day happened in Jerusalem where Jesus commanded the apostles to stay until the comforter came (Luke 24:48-49). Peter told the multitude that on that day the church was established,
"For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘ And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.' " (Acts 2:14-21).
The churches of Christ have no worldy creed or doctrine. Our only doctrine is the Bible itself, because using another doctrine or creed is forbidden by God (Rev. 22:18-19). Using the Bible as the only authority, we meet to worship on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7). During our worship service we include teaching (Col 3:16), prayer (Acts 2:42), singing (Eph 5:19), the Lords Supper (Acts 20:7), and giving as we have been prospered (1 Cor. 16:2).
The plan of salvation that the church of Christ believes in is simple, and is based solely on what the Scripture says:
- First, we must hear the Word. Rom. 10:17, "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ."
- Second, we must believe in the Word. John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
- Third, we must repent of our sins. Luke 13:3, "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."
- Fourth, we must confess that Jesus is the Christ, Rom. 10:10, "for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."
- Fifth, we must be baptized for the remission of sins. Acts 2:38,"Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
- Last, we must live a faithful life. Rev. 2:10, "'...be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life."
Now let us look at this plan in action in Acts 8:14-40.
So, when they had solemnly testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, and were preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans. But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, "Get up and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza." (This is a desert road.) So he got up and went; and there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure; and he had come to Jerusalem to worship, and he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go up and join this chariot." Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this: "HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP TO SLAUGHTER; AND AS A LAMB BEFORE ITS SHEARER IS SILENT, SO HE DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH. IN HUMILIATION HIS JUDGMENT WAS TAKEN AWAY; WHO WILL RELATE HIS GENERATION? FOR HIS LIFE IS REMOVED FROM THE EARTH." The eunuch answered Philip and said, "Please tell me, of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself or of someone else?" Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him. As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?" And Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he kept preaching the gospel to all the cities until he came to Caesarea.
When we first see the eunuch he was reading and studying the Word. This is exactly what we, who desire to find salvation, need to do, search the Scriptures. Secondly, we see the eunuch ask Phillip questions about what he was reading. This is another important point. We need to ask questions when we find something that we don't understand. When one has a question about God's Word, he should ask a Christian brother or sister to help him, we are always willing to help others find Christ! Thirdly, we see him hearing the Word, through Phillip, believing it, confessing it, repenting of his sins, and then being immediately baptized for the remission of his sins. There is no plan simpler than that. We hope that this page has shed some light on what the church of Christ believes in, and we ask that if anyone has any questions, feel free to email us or call us and we will be more than happy to help you. God bless.
